Munford gives Lincoln lots to Ponder in baseball; Pleasant Valley softball ends weekend against 6A, 7A competition in Hoover with victory over Smiths Station

LINCOLN — Jonathan Ponder hit a grand slam and drove in six runs on the day, and Munford downed Lincoln 16-3 in Saturday’s high school baseball action.
Ponder was 3-for-4 and scored two runs.
Munford also got two RBIs apiece from Trenten Stringfellow, B.J. Anderson and Lathan Stephens. Connor Fisher and Alex Petty each had a double.
On the mound, Petty started and pitched the first four innings, allowing five hits, one earned run and two walks with four strikeouts.
Softball
PLEASANT VALLEY IN HOOVER: The Raiders have battled injuries and a rugged schedule early this season, and they went 1-2 in Hoover High’s tourney this weekend.
Pleasant Valley (4-6) lost to Helena 18-3 on Friday and Hoover 10-2 on Saturday but rebounded to finish with an 8-3 victory over Smiths Station.
Against Smiths Station, Lily Henry went 2-for-3 with a home run and double, two runs and three RBIs. She also pitched 6 2/3 innings, spreading out seven hits with three earned runs and five strikeouts.
Gracie Ward doubled and drove in two runs. Macey Roper, Madyson Cromer and Haylie Lee each drove in a run, and leadoff Rebekah Gannaway went 2-for-4 with two runs.
In other games, Gannaway had three hits and a run against Hoover, and Ward homered with three RBIs against Helena.
