OXFORD — Peyton Watts, Trace Adams and Tide Gann drove in two runs apiece, and Oxford’s baseball team beat Pell City 7-5 in the first game of a Class 6A, Area 13 series at Choccolocco Park.
Sam Robertson, working his way back from a left-knee injury and seeing action as a designated hitter, also drove in a run.
Oxford took the lead for good with five two-out runs in the bottom of the first inning. Carter Johnson singled, and Hayes Harrison reached as a hit batsman. Hudson Gilman walked, Adams followed with a two-run single.
A Forrest Heacock single loaded the bases, and Robertson walked to score Gilman. Gann followed with a two-run single.
Pell City closed to within 5-3, but Oxford scored twice in the third.
Watts also pitched two perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts.
PIEDMONT 10, GUNTERSVILLE 0: At Piedmont, Jack Hayes homered, doubled twice and drove in seven runs to lead the Piedmont offense, and Brodie Homesley pitched a no-hitter.
Hayes was 3-for-3 on the day and scored two runs.
Homesley pitched all five innings, striking out five batters and walking two.
Jake Austin delivered two hits and scored a run, and McClane Mohon went 1-for-1 with three runs and an RBI. Cole Austin hit a double and scored a run.
JACKSONVILLE 3, CLEBURNE COUNTY 1: Grant Patterson pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts and two walks over seven innings to lead the Golden Eagles to a Class 4A, Area 9 victory.
Will Greenwood, Jim Ogle, Jackson Bonner, Bradyn Loggins and Gavin Peeler each had a hit for Jacksonville. Peeler had the Golden Eagles’ lone RBI, and Greenwood hit a double.
ALEXANDRIA 4, MOBILE CHRISTIAN 0: Andrew Allen pitched a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts in seven innings. He walked one batter.
Samuel Henegar had a double and drove in three runs, and Eli Barnes had the Valley Cubs’ other RBI. Aiden Brunner went 2-for-2 with a double and a run.
Alexandria’s scheduled game with Faith Academy was canceled.
Softball
PIEDMONT 4, JACKSONVILLE 0: Emma Grace Todd spread six hits out over seven innings and struck out eight batters with no walks for Piedmont.
Savannah Smith led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Jenna Calvert and Cacey Brothers each drove in a run.
Sara Kate Adams and Carli Fritz each had two of Jacksonville’s hits. Dailyn Wood and Keelie Leach had one apiece.
ALEXANDRIA 7, JOHN CARROLL 2: Pressley Slaton homered and drove in two runs, and she limited John Carroll to five hits in four innings. She struck out three batters and walked two.
Christian Hess and Brenlee Sparks each had a hit and RBI for Alexandria. Hess hit a double.
Alexandria (16-11) improved to 3-1 in Gulf Shores.
WHITE PLAINS 2, FLORENCE 0: Leighton Arnold pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks over five innings as White Plains (12-7) improved to 3-1 in Gulf Shores. She also had one of White Plains’ two hits, and Cassidy Arnold had the other.
MUNFORD 3, CENTRAL-CLAY 0: Khloe Shears stuck out 12 batters while pitching a shutout for Munford.
Kastin Lathem and Brooklyn Pressley each homered for Munford. Chloe Pickett, Ashtyn Bishop and Crimson Connor each had a hit.
Munford is 12-4.
