Big second inning separates Alexandria from Jacksonville; Hortonville (Wis.) hears Oxford buzz as Yellow Jackets roll; PV extends winning streak; Piedmont wins

JACKSONVILLE — Alexandria answered a one-run Jacksonville first inning with a five-run second and went on to beat the Golden Eagles 10-4 on Saturday.

Ian Cartwright led the charge at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, run and two RBIs. Brodie Slaton also had a double and two RBIs.

Samuel Henegar went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs on the day.

Cartwright, Evan Snow and Aaron Johnson all hit run-scoring singles in the second inning, and Seth Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk.

Starter Zach Baskins and Henegar combined to spread out seven Jacksonville hits over seven innings. Baskins worked five innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and four walks with two strikeouts. Henegar worked the last two innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs and one walk with two strikeouts.

Jacksonville’s Ryan Mitchell doubles twice and drove in a run. Jackson Bonner also had two hits, and Jim Ogle hit a double.

Alexandria, ranked third in Class 5A in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll, improved to 18-5.

OXFORD 8, HORTONVILLE (Wis.) 0: Jackson Crow, Jake Tapley and Trace Adams combined to pitch a one-hitter as 6A top-ranked Oxford improved to 22-6.

Crow allowed no hits with eight strikeouts and four walks through the first five innings. Tapley pitched one inning, allowing one hit with a strikeout, and Adams allowed no hits with two strikeouts in one inning.

Carter Johnson and Hayes Harrison starred at the plate. Johnson with 3-for-4 with three triples, three runs and an RBI. Harrison was 3-for-3 with a triple, double, run and three RBIs.

Drew McCormick had a hit and two RBIs.

PLEASANT VALLEY 15, JACKSONVILLE 8: Pleasant Valley (11-9) got two hits apiece from the first four batters in the order and No. 9 hitter and extended its winning streak to five games.

Samuel Duncan went 2-for-4 with three runs. Holt Bentley was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Zeke Curvin was 2-for-5 with two runs, Connor George 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs.

No. 9 hitter John-Garrett Bryant went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.

Curvin and George each had a double.

Johnson and Duncan combined to hold Jacksonville to seven hits. Johnson had four strikeouts in two innings of work.

Jacksonville’s Jackson Bonner wen 2-for-5 with a double and RBI. Drew Pridgen had a double and two runs. Jim Ogle and Grant Patterson had two RBIs apiece.

PIEDMONT 9, HOKES BLUFF 3: Jack Hayes drove in three runs, and Max Hanson reeled off three hits as Piedmont improved to 14-5.

Hayes was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Hanson was 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and an RBI.

The Bulldogs also got an RBI apiece from McClane Mohon and Kale Austin.

Cole Austin got the win, working four innings with four strikeouts, two walks and earned runs. Sloan Smith worked two innings of relief, and Brodie Homesley finished it in the seventh.
