Alexandria girls win Chesley Oaks Spring Classic, seek defend their Calhoun County title starting today at Pine Hill; Oxford, Alexandria and Piedmont sweep in baseball

HOLLY POND — Headed into today’s Calhoun County golf championship at Pine Hill, defending champion Alexandria’s girls won the 10th annual Chesley Oaks Spring Classic on Thursday.

The Valley Cubs shot 254, three shots better than second-place White Plains and 18 better than third-place Hartselle.

Avery Prickett led the way, shooting 83 for fifth place. Nevaeh Foster took sixth at 85, and Marlee Hedgepeth shot an 85.

Alexandria will try to defend its Calhoun County title today and Saturday at Pine Hill Country Club.

Baseball

OXFORD 8-3, FORT PAYNE 1-2: Oxford pitchers held Fort Payne to six hits over 14 innings of a doubleheader Friday and completed a sweep of their Class 6A, Area 13 series at Choccolocco Park.

Class 6A top-ranked Oxford won Game 1 8-1 and Game 2 3-2 to improve to 25-6 on the season.

In Game 1, Peyton Watts allowed one hit with three strikeouts over four innings, and Carter Johnson spread out four hits over three innings with two strikeouts.

In Game 2, Drew McCormick, Hayden Gallahar and Jackson Crow combined for a one-hitter. McCormick worked three innings, Gallahar and Crow two apiece. They combined for 10 strikeouts.

At the plate, Hayes Harrison went 0-for-4 but had two RBIs. Leadoff hitter Nick Richardson went 2-for-4 with two runs.

Watts, Johnson and Tide Gann each had a double and RBI

ALEXANDRIA 10-5, LINCOLN 2-0: The second-ranked Valley Cubs completed a sweep of their Class 5A, Area 12 series to clinch their second consecutive area title.

In Game 2, Alexandria (21-5, 6-0) got a complete-game, two-hit shutout from Tripp Patterson and a home run from Aiden Brunner. Patterson stuck out five batters with no walks over seven innings for his fourth consecutive complete game, and Brunner had two RBIs.

Sanuel Henegar went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run and two RBIs, and Zach Baskins had a double and RBI. Evan Snow also hit a double.

In Game 1, Henegar went 2-for-4 with a home run, double, two runs and two RBIs. Ty Brown went 2-for-2 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs.

Seth Johnson was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Evan Snow had two hits, and Brodie Slaton had a double and RBI.

On the mound, Brayden Thacker spread out four hits over five innings with five strikeouts and one walk and no runs allowed.

PIEDMONT 13-15, SAKS 3-1: Piedmont (17-5) swept to clinch the Class 3A, Area 10 title, the Bulldogs 11th area title in as many years.

Piedmont pounded out 20 hits on the day. McClane Mohon was 4-for-5 with two triples, six runs and two RBIs, Max Hanson 3-for-4 with five runs and three RBIs , Jack Hayes 5-for-6 with four runs and four RBIs, and Jake Austin 2-for-6 with two runs and three RBIs.

Cole Wilson was 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs in Game 1. Kale Austin had a double in each game.

Kale Austin and Jonah Pike combined to hold Saks to three hits in the first game.Austin struck out seven batters over 4 2/3 innings. Cane Hendon, Cole Austin and Trevor Pike pitched a combined two-hitter in Game 2.
