SILVER LAKES — Add sub-state champion to Nick Ledbetter’s high school golf credentials, and Piedmont’s girls are bound for the state tournament, as well.
This after Monday’s sub-state action at Silver Lakes.
Ledbetter won a one-hole playoff in Heartbreaker No. 9 to take low medalist in the boys’ Class 3A North 2 sub-state, and Piedmont’s girls finished second in the Class 1A-3A North 1 sub-state to qualify as a team.
Ledbetter shot a 1-over-par 73 in regulation then parred the playoff hole to prevail over Laudedale County’s Freddie McConnell.
His sub-state victory at Silver Lakes comes after he played in the RTJ-Silver Lakes Championship over the weekend, and he said time on the course helped Monday.
“It did,” he said. “I didn’t play good but managed the course well and somehow got around at 1 over.”
Led by Brookelyn Goss’ 104, Piedmont’s girls finished 88 strokes behind sub-state champion Lindsay Lane. The top two teams qualify for state.
“Just proud of the girls,” Piedmont coach Horace Bramblett said. “All of our kids have worked hard the last few years to make our program have some relevance. We almost made it a couple of years ago but fell short.
“Just super proud of the girls. Guys too for that matter. It’s the most fun group I have coached. Zero drama all year. Just great kids learning and loving the play the game.”
The state tournament is Monday and Tuesday at RTJ-Grand National, in Opelika.
