WEAVER — A new women’s soccer team led to a chance for Weaver’s Ximena Chavez to play beyond high school.
The Weaver senior signed Wednesday to play for Southern Union Community College. She made it official during a ceremony at Weaver High School. She becomes the first Weaver soccer player to sign to play collegiately.
“Southern Union is having their first women’s soccer team, and I have been a part of many firsts with Weaver High School,” she said. “I knew Southern Union … was my place with the way Coach Mac (Matthews) showed how exciting this journey was for him and all the girl soccer players.
“My original plan was to attend Auburn University, but ending my soccer career after high school was something I knew I didn’t want to end yet.”
Chavez took 32 shots and made nine goals with one assist as a senior. She also had one save.
