Oxford’s new pro softball team gets strong pitching from Fisher and Hyland but suffers two-hitter in season-opening loss to Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY — Amber Fisher and Sierra Hyland combined to strike out 10 batters and allow no earned runs, but Oxford’s Smash It Sports Vipers lost their 2023 Women’s Professional Fastpitch opener to the Oklahoma City Spark 2-1 on Friday.
Their scheduled season-opener, set for Thursday, was postponed because of weather with the Spark leading 4-1 in the second inning. It will be completed at a date to be determined.
Fisher worked 3 ⅔ innings, allowing one hit and four walks with six strikeouts. Hyland finished the final 2 ⅓ innings, allowing two hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
Chelsea Gonzalez and Makena Smith accounted for the Vipers’ two hits, both singles, and Karly Heath drove in their run on a second-inning fielder’s choice.
Chenice Delce and Donnie Gobourne pitched a combined two-hitter for Oklahoma City.
The Spark scored both of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on back-to-back, two-out RBI singles by Michelle Moultrie and Jocelyn Alo. The Spark had three hits in the inning, but a hit batsman and error gave them two base runners.
