Wigington finishes tied for 12th to leads area golfers. Mobile’s Elder prevails over Fort Payne’s Hawkins in three-hole playoff

GADSDEN — Gary Wigington came away as the top area finisher in the 35th Alabama State Mid-Amameur Championship.
Wigington fought through “abdominal issues” to finish tied for 12th and in the money, shooting 1-over-par 68-73-73—214. He finished seven strokes behind Mobile’s Conner Elder, who prevailed over Fort Payne’s Hunter Hawkins in a three-hole playoff for the championship.
“Overall, was a pretty good weekend,” Wigington said. “Been having abdominal issues for the last couple of weeks and almost dropped out this morning.”
Golfers who finished in the top 60 made the cut for Sunday’s final round. Other players of area interest:
