HANDLEY — The Class 4A, Area 8 race in girls’ basketball just got more interesting.
Zanautika Smith led a balanced effort with 11 points, and Handley topped Anniston 44-33 to improve to 16-4 on the season.
Anniston (18-3) suffered its first loss to 4A competition this season. It’s other two losses came against 6A Parker and Pell City.
Handley got nine points apiece from Akia Brown and Takeriauna Mosley, eight points with two 3-pointers from Kristiana Tucker and six points from Takeira Tucker.
The Tigers outscored Anniston 14-5 in the fourth quarter to take control.
A’Kayla Perry led Anniston with 14 points, including two 3-pointers.
CLEBURNE COUNTY 44, WEAVER 37: Cleburne County’s Faith Brown poured in 29 points, 23 in the second half, and grabbed 15 rebounds.

—Hannah Turley: seven points, eight rebounds.
Weaver’s top performers:
—Aaliyah Marks: 12 points (one 3-pointer).
—Erionna Richmond: nine points.
—D.J. Gibbs: eight points.
ALEXANDRIA 46, LINCOLN 40: Charlee Parris led Alexandria with 18 points, including a 3-pointer. She also hit seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter.

—Makayla Brewster: six points (one 3-pointer).

OXFORD 72, CULLMAN 65: Tennessee State signee Xai Whitfield poured in 33 points, hitting one 3-pointer and 12 of 14 free throws, to lead Oxford.

PLEASANT VALLEY 50, WOODLAND 24: Three players scored nine points apiece to pace Pleasant Valley, and the Raiders outscored Woodland 22-3 in the fourth quarter while improving to 7-6 and earning the right to play host to the Class 2A, Area 9 tournament.

WHITE PLAINS 60, CHEROKEE COUNTY 36: Carter Johnson powered his way to 15 points in the post, and White Plains (14-7) picked up a victory in Class 4A, Area 10 play.
