White Plains wins first two softball games with Muncher as head coach. Alexandria sweeps. Pleasant Valley and Handley victorious. In baseball, Jacksonville makes it two wins in a row, Oxford splits and Munford ups to 6-1. Saks girls roll in soccer.

GLENCOE — Lex Hull-Muncher’s tenure as White Plains’ head softball coach got off to a successful start Friday.
Leighton Arnold and Carli Fritts each pitched a shutout, and the Wildcats beat Southside 2-0 and Glencoe 3-0.
Arnold allowed five hits and one walk with eight strikeouts against Southside. Fritts allowed four hits and no walks with six strikeouts against Glencoe.
Addi Bradley hit a solo home run against Southside.
Against Glencoe, Bradley had a triple and three RBIs, and Arnold doubled and scored a run.
“We did not play our best softball tonight, but we found a way to get the job done,” Muncher said. “We had hitters step up in moments where they made it count. Our pitchers really held it down tonight and kept us in both games.
“We will continue pushing the gas and moving forward as a team. Everyone has a role, and I fully expect everyone to step up going forward. It’s always a good day when these girls get to compete and do their thing.”
ALEXANDRIA SWEEPS: a softball stands two games and 22 runs into its season.
The Valley Cubs opened with a doubleheader at Etowah on Friday, beating the Blue Devils 11-1 then beating Arab 11-2. Alexandria dominated in the circle and at the plate.
Pressley Slaton and K England pitched a combined three-hitter against Etowah. Slaton worked a scoreless first four innings, allowing one hit and one walk with five strikeouts. England pitched the fifth inning.
Slaton went four innings against Arab, allowing five hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.
At the plate, Allyssa Hunt went 2-for-4 with a solo home run against Etowah, and Clancy Bright had a double among her two hits. Slaten went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Kaden Prichett went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
The Hess sisters, Christian and Cali, had a hit and RBi apiece.
Against Arab, Hunt and Charlee Parris had three RBIs apiece. Hunt had two hits, including her second homer of the day, and Parris hit a triple.
Brenlee Sparks doubled with an RBI, and Prichett had a single and RBI.
HANDLEY 8, MOUNTAIN BROOK 2: Handley punched up Friday and landed a punch against Class 6A Mountain Brook.
Mariana Whaley and A Hill allowed a combined two hits in four innings, and Ava Hill had five of their nine strikeouts in two innings of work.
Hill also had a grand slam home run among her two hits and drove in five runs. She also scored two runs.
Rana Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, and Kamlyn Holloway doubled and scored a run.
Handley is 1-1 on the season.
PLEASANT VALLEY 17, GADSDEN CITY 5: Madyson Cromer homered twice and drove in six runs as the Raiders opened the season with a victory Thursday at Gadsden City. She hit three-run homers in the first and fourth innings.
Alexa Cranmer went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. Jordan Cheatwood and Abigail Evans each singled and drove in a run,and Gracee Ward doubled and scored twice.
Lily Henry singled with an RBI and scored three runs. She also got the win, working the first three innings, and Haylie Lee pitched three innings of relief.
Baseball
JACKSONVILLE 7, GLENCOE 5: Jackson Bonner’s single scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking a 5-5 tie and making the difference for the Golden Eagles at home Friday.
Ryan Mitchell had a single and two RBIs, and Kingston Peeler went 2-for-3 with two runs. Xavier Lemon added an RBI and two runs as Jacksonville (2-3) recorded its second consecutive win.
John Ducar pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts to get the win in relief.
OXFORD SPLITS: Oxford rebounded from an 8-3 loss to Parkview with a 4-1 victory over Hoover on Friday.
Starter Colton Parten and R.J. Brooks combined to pitch a three-hitter. Brooks worked the final five innings, allowing two hits and four walks but no runs with four strikeouts.
At the plate, Hudson Gilman went 2-for-2 with a double, RBI and a run. Tide Gann and Reid Maniscalco each had a single and RBI, and Brooks added an RBI.
Against Parkview, Gann and Brooks each had a single and RBI, and Nick Richardson drove in a run.
MUNFORD 8, CHILDERSBURG 1: B.J. Anderson struck out 12 batters and got plenty of run support as Munford improved to 6-1.
Gatlin Watts hit two doubles and had two RBIs, and David Pettus went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Munford also got doubles from Anderson, Mason Brewer and Lathan Stephens. Anderson and Stephens each had an RBI.
GRISSOM 6, ALEXANDRIA 0: Brodie Slaton and Ian Cartwright each went 2-for-4, and Cartwright hit a double. Aiden Brunner, Zach Baskins and Ty Brown each had a hit.
Justin Campbell pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with six strikeouts.
Soccer
SAKS GIRLS 7, JACKSONVILLE 3: Freshman Layla Garcia and junior Alonna Crews led the Wildcats with three goals apiece. Loani Martinez added a goal for the Wildcats.
