ALEXANDRIA — Tripp Patterson pitched a four-hitter in Game 1, and the Valley Cubs stemmed a Southside rally in Game 2 to sweep the Panthers 4-3 and 11-7 in Class 5A, Area 12 play on Saturday.
The Valley Cubs (21-8) clinched the area title and right to play host to its first-round playoff series against Douglas, which starts Friday.
Patterson’s four-hitter came in Alexandria’s 4-3 win. He struck out six batters and allowed two earned runs in seven innings.
Alexandria’s Aiden Brunner had a triple and a double and an RBI. Zach Baskins went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Brodie Slaton and Samuel Henegar had an RBI apiece.
Alexandria’s Evan Snow was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI in the Valley Cubs’ 11-7 victory. They also got an RBI apiece from Brunner, Brayden Thacker and Nic Thompson.
OXFORD 0-5, AMERICAN CHRISTIAN 5-4: Oxford split with American Christian while celebrating senior day at Bud McCarty Field.
Seniors included R.J. Brooks, Tide Gann, Forrest Heacock, Carter Johnson, Judd Syer and Branson Whiteside.
Oxford (25-9) managed three hits in Saturday’s opener with ACA, but answered a two-run ACA sixth inning with a two-run sixth of its own to retake the lead for good in the second game.
Reid Maniscalco hit a solo home run, the second home run of his varsity career, and Heacock hit an RBI single to give Oxford the 5-4 lead.
Maniscalco had two RBIs for the game.
Rocco Maniscalco hit a two-run double in the third inning.
Gavin Griner pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs and striking out four batters. Bryson Bradford got the win, allowing one hit and one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings.
Oxford opens the playoffs at home on Friday against Parker.
