ANNISTON — Four teams shot 11-under-par 59 to share the lead after Saturday’s first round of the first annual Ted’s Charity Invitational Golf Tournament at Anniston Country Club, and three more teams lurk one shot back.
Ty Cole/Gary Wigington, Jacob LeCroy/Tanner Wells, Scott Murphree/Greg Shultz and Corey Ray/Dane Moore shot 59.
Kevin Daughtery/Chandler Wilborn, Jaylon Ellison/Adam Kilpatrick and Tyler Huckaby/Jack Svensen finished the day one shot off of the lead.
The first Ted’s Charity Invitational drew 80 two-man teams and will play out over two days, concluding with Sunday’s final round. This year’s tournament will benefit Cobb Preparatory Academy, and each year’s tournament will benefit a different school in Calhoun County.
Ted’s take
“A word from Ted Gregerson, tournament director, after Day 1 of the first-ever Ted’s Charity Invitational:
“Day 1 could not have went better for our inaugural Tournament.
“We were really concerned with how the pace of play would be having 80 teams and 40 tee times. But everyone agreed that the pace of play was better than expected.
“We were constantly asking the golfers for suggestions as to how we could make it better. They all said there was absolutely nothing they could suggest. They said they were amazed, and would never have guessed this was our first tournament.
“We had a lot of volunteers that helped out, and we cannot thank them enough. The two food stations we had seemed to be a hit with everyone, The Classic Melt and Coldwater Mountain Brewpub.
“Weather was perfect.
“Course was in great shape. The greens were aerated 2 1/2 weeks ago and even though they were not back to perfection yet, all the golfers said they were a tad slower than normal, but the putts rolled good.
“Scoring was about what we expected for Day 1, as the projected winning score for the tournament is 20 under, and there were a number of 11 and 10 unders. Tomorrow is the more difficult format, so that should put us right at the 20 under projection.”
