White Plains’ Conn takes third overall to help North girls to victory in cross country. Austin, Barksdale contribute as North sweeps in basketball.

MONTGOMERY — A look at performances by area athletes playing in the Alabama North-South All-Star Sports week in Montgomery:
Volleyball
With Alexandria’s Whitney Welch on the coaching staff and a team that included Spring Garden’s Ace Austin and Pleasant Valley’s Lily Henry, the North rallied to beat the South 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 23-25, 15-9. Austin was a North All-Star in volleyball and basketball.
Softball
Southside’s Jalyn Allen appeared in relief in Game 2, getting the final out with bases loaded to preserve an 11-11 tie and avoid a South sweep Wednesday. The South won Game 1 3-0.
Soccer
Southside’s Camren Thompson scored two goals and dished out an assist as the North boys win 4-1 on Wednesday. Jacksonville’s Emma Easterling and Donoho’s Samantha Wakefield played for the North girls in their 4-1 victory.
Cross country
Two-time defending Class 4A State cross country champion Maddyn Conn, of White Plains, who announced her commitment to Jacksonville State University over the weekend, finished third overall to help the North girls defeat the South 17-38 on Tuesday.
She ran the 5K distance in 19 minutes, 16.10 seconds. The North’s Emma Brooke Levering won in 18:41.80.
Southside’s Evan Christopher finished fourth (16:08.68) to help the North boys beat the South win 20-41. Former Ohatchee coach Casey Howell, now at Cold Springs, coached the North boys.
Basketball
Austin had five points and four assists to help the North girls win 87-46. Austin has committed to play for Alabama.
Southside’s Justin Bowen was the North’s head coach.
Former Jacksonville point guard Devin Barksdale, who has enrolled at Gadsden City, contributed 13 points, one rebound, one assist and one block to help the North boys beat the South 97-85.
Golf
Fresh off coaching the Alexandria girls to the Class 4A-5A state title, the second state title in the program’s history, Craig Kiker led the North girls to a 51-39 victory over the South in match play. Alexandria’s Nevaeh Foster played St. Paul’s Episcopal’s Laurel Gottlieb to a 9-9 tie.
On the boys side, Westbrook Christian’s Cove McHugh won North MVP honors, beating St. Paul’s Walter Hensley 11-7 as the North swept the South 5-0.
Baseball
Piedmont’s Brodie Homesley pitched one inning of relief in the North’s 4-1 loss to the South in Game 1, allowing two hits, two earned runs and three walks with one strikeout. Oxford’s Nick Richardson went 0-for-3 at the plate.
Game 2 was rained out.
