Jacksonville takes second in gold bracket at Albertville, and Donoho splits four matches. In cross country, Southside’s Christopher, Oxford’s Maniscalco win Waffle House/Yellow Jacket Invitational.

ALBERTVILLE — Jacksonville’s volleyball team reached the gold-bracket championship of the Albertville Invitational on Saturday and finished second.

The Golden Eagles beat Cherokee County 25-18, 22-25, 15-11, beat North Jackson 25-21, 25-15, beat Fyffe 25-21, 25-12, lost to Albertville 18-25, 17-25, beat Springville 25-23, 25-19 and lost to Albertville 26-24, 12-25, 7-15 in the gold bracket championship.

An ankle injury to setter Sydney Soriano in the second set hampered Jacksonville’s cause in the championship match. 

“We played well the whole day up until that point,” Jacksonville coach Amber Russell said.

Jacksonville’s top performers:

—Soriano: nine aces, two kills, 65 assists, three blocks, six digs.
—Camryn Stone: four aces, 22 kills, 12 blocks, 12 digs.
—Mya Swain: three aces, nine kills, 14 blocks, two digs.
—Nyla Hoult: 13 kills, three aces, one block, one dig.
—Chloe Henderson: one kill, four aces, 28 digs.
—Alexis Phillips: three aces, 11 kills, two blocks, 10 digs.
—Reese Rollins: one ace, five kills, four blocks, two digs.

DONOHO: The Falcons went 2-2 in the Albertville Invitational.

Playing in the gold bracket, they lost to Springville 16-25, 21-25, beat Ramsay 25-20, 25-19, beat Geraldine 25-23, 25-21 and lost to Albertville 25-18, 18-25, 14-16.

Donoho’s top performers:

—Kate Williamon: 22 kills, four assists, four aces, 34 digs.
—Sam Wakefield: 30 kills, four assists, 12 aces, 37 digs, three blocks.
—Ryals Jones: 14 kills, three digs, five blocks.
—Callee Taylor: six kills, 68 assists, six aces, 35 digs.
—Ava Michaels: four kills, one assist, 10 digs.
—Bentlee Pahman: four assists, 32 digs.
—Chloe Melton: two kills, two aces, four digs.
—Alana Maldonado: 12 kills, four digs, two blocks.
—Lindsey Brewer: one assist, one ace, four digs.
—Anna Kate Whitson: one assist, 14 digs.

Cross country

Southside’s Evan Christopher and Oxford’s Emerson Maniscalco led the way in Saturday’s Oxford’s Waffle House/Yellow Jacket Invitational.

Christopher finished first out of 225 boys, running in 16 minutes, 20.70 seconds. Maniscalo was first among 160 girls, winning in 20:50.24.

Lincoln won the boys’ team championship, edging Oxford 53 points to 69. Southside dominated the girls’ field with 26 points, and Douglas was second at 111.
