WELLBORN — Weaver quarterback was airlifted from the field during Wellborn’s 30-8 victory over the Bearcats on Friday, Weaver coach Ken Cofer confirms.
When asked Gooden’s condition, Cofer said he did not know, but Cofer confirmed that Gooden was moving limbs and extremities.
The game ended with 25.7 seconds to play.
A late post to the Weaver High School Football Facebook page provided an “update on Kaden.”
“He’s good!” the post read. “He’s been cleared, and they are about to send him home!”
Prior to that update, Wellborn coach Jeff Smith put Gooden’s injury scare into perspective.
“I’m just praying that he’s OK,” Smith said. “Very unfortunate. I hate that. It’s a good win for us, but it’s dampered because of an injury to another player,
“Football is just a game. We don’t want anybody to get injured out of it.”
Jackson Newton paced Wellborn, rushing 18 times or 143 yards and two touchdowns. Kyle Bright added 50 yards on nine rushes, and the Panthers rushed for 317 yards.
Quarterback Aziah Amberson rushed for 35 yards and a touchdown and passed for 54 and a score.
Wellborn pulled away after the teams went into halftime tied 8-8.
“I’m happy we’re 2-0, but we have long ways to go,” Smith said. “We have a lot of things to fix.”
OXFORD 45, SHADES VALLEY 21: Oxford broke the Class 6A, Region 6 game open with a big second half.
The Yellow Jackets (3-0) took the lead for good, 24-21, on a field goal at 6:32 in the third quarter, and Mason Mims followed that up with a 51-yard bomb to Jaylin Taylor to make it 31-21 at 0:34 of the third.
Another Mims-to-Taylor connection made it 38-21 at 10;16 of the fourth, ad Caleb Wynn added a touchdown run at 6:52.
Oxford outgained Shades Valley 341 yards to 232 despite running 50 plays to Shades Valley’s 62. Mims completed 14 of 21 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns, and Taylor caught six passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns.
Wynn rushed for 122 yards and two scores.
Keenan Britt led the defense with six solo tackles and seven assists, including two sacks and four tackles for loss. James Tapley had five solos and eight assists.
“Shades Valley did a good job of keeping the ball away from us for the first half,” Oxford coach Sam Adams said. “I was proud of the way our team stayed patient and pulled away in the second half.”
ALEXANDRIA 35, WHITE PLAINS 7: Elijah Hunter rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns as Alexandria improved to 1-1 on the season.
His touchdown runs covered six, 13 and five yards.
J.J. Beason added 89 yards rushing, and M.J. Morris returned an interception 24 yards for a score. Quarterback Cole Wheeler carried for a 1-yard touchdown.
Ryan Brown led the Valley Cubs with eight tackles.
White Plains’ P.J. Holloway rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown, and Rodney Perry added 86 yards rushing. The Wildcats are 1-1.
PLEASANT VALLEY 12, DONOHO 2: Pleasant Valley forced five turnovers, including three fumble recoveries, while improving to 2-1 on the season with a victory at Donoho.
Hunter Sparks and Cooper Dougal each intercepted a pass. Jaden Sparks recovered two fumbles, and Nick Acker recovered one.
“It was a defensive night, for sure,” Pleasant Valley coach Jonathan Nix said.
Braxton Salster led the defense with nine tackles. Jaden Sparks, Noah Johnson, Brayden Pappa and Nic Acker had six piece.
Donoho took a 2-0 lead after a punt snap sailed over Sparks’ head. He retrieved the ball in the end zone and tried to pass it out but was called for grounding.
The Raiders took a 6-2 lead just before halftime, when Salster completed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Sparks on fourth down and 17.
Kayden Vick added a 5-yard touchdown run in the second half.
JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN 42, TRINITY 12: Noah Lee completed 13 of 17 for 319 yards and two touchdowns as JCA improved to 3-1.
Jesse Gannaway caught six passes 148 yards and and two touchdowns. Bryson Dowdey had five catches for 130 yards, and Caleb Stallings’ one carry went for a 61-yard touchdown.
Nick Brodeur added 30 yards on nine carries and two scores, and Moses Averette rushed four times for 26 yards and two touchdowns.
The Thunder forced six turnovers, including four fumble recoveries. Jack Henry Harris had five tackles, including three for loss and an interception. Brodeur, Jameson Holderread, Leland Potts and Brodeur each had fumble recoveries, and T.J. Scott intercepted two passes.
HANDLEY 35, CLEBURNE COUNTY 14: JaMarcus Daniel rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns, and Handley improved to 2-1 while opening Class 4A, Region 3 play with a victory.
Daniel’s touchdown runs covered seven and three yards.
Cordan Patterson hit on three of five passes for 98 yards, including touchdown passes of 38 yards to Elijah Stegall and 31 yards to Taevion Houston.
Houston also caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Cade Shubert and finished with four catches for 98 yards.
RANBURNE 19, LAFAYETTE 14: Creed Young completed seven of 10 passes for 96 yards and rushed for 41 yards and a touchdown as Ranburne improved to 2-1. He also had a team-high seven tackles, including a sack.
Crimson Champion led the Bulldogs with 61 rushing yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 17 yards.
Curtis Daniel rushed for 30 yards and a touchdown and had six tackles.
Kalon Smith rushed for 34 yards, and Dawson Jarrett caught two passes for 60 yards. Aiden Jackson added four tackles.
WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN 27, SAKS 7: Brody Blevins carried 25 times for 162 yards and three touchdowns as the Warriors improved to 2-0.
He also completed nine of 15 passes for 90 yards.
Westbrook outgained Saks (0-3) 277 yards to 132.
