ALEXANDRIA — Oxford’s boys look to reclaim their Calhoun County supremacy in this year’s county basketball tournament. Oxford’s girls look to keep it.

Both will go into the tournament as top seeds after the county’s coaches voted Wednesday at Alexandria High School.

The tournament starts on Jan. 17 and stretches to Jan. 28 in Jacksonville State University’s Pete Mathews Coliseum, with a gap between Jan. 21 and Jan. 25 to accommodate two Jax State women’s Conference USA home games.

Oxford’s boys (14-5) enter the tournament ranked No. 4 in Class 6A in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll. The Yellow Jackets finished as runner up in last year’s tournament, falling to Jacksonville 56-36 in the final.

Tournament most valuable player and Class 4A-6A All-County player of the year Devin Barksdale transferred from Jacksonville to Gadsden City. Oxford’s Jaylen Alexander enters this year’s tournament widely regarded as the county’s top player with a more developed supporting cast around him this season.

Jacksonville is the lone county opponent Oxford has played this season, and the Yellow Jackets won 80-48 at Jacksonville on Nov. 11.

“I always say this, but any tournament is won on the floor,” Oxford coach Joel Van Meter said. “I think we’re playing better and better every day.

“We’re excited to play in it as always. It’s just an unbelievable tournament, and I want to thank JSU, President (Don) Killingsworth, (Athletics Director) Greg Seitz and (men’s basketball) Coach (Ray) Harper for making this happen. I think all of us coaches, that we’re appreciative to play there, because it makes the tournament.”

Oxford’s girls (11-8) have won the past three county tournaments, and they beat No. 2 seed Jacksonville 68-47 on Nov. 11.

The Yellow Jackets lost 4A-6A county player of the year Xai Whitfield to graduation but return key pieces, including post Shay Montgomery, Ava Thomas and Bri Wilson. Their losses this season include two against Spring Garden, led by Alabama signee Ace Austin.

“I’ve been really proud,” Oxford coach Melissa Bennett said. “I think our losses, we’ve done a pretty good job of learning from. Most of our losses have been quality losses. We always try to schedule pretty strong.

“I love this time of year. I love the county tournament. I love how it’s right between area stuff. It’s a great break. It’s huge momentum.”
