OHATCHEE — Rebecca Henderson gets to go play college volleyball for her best friend’s older sister. Brett Finn looks forward to hands-on coaching.

Together, they became the latest triumph for Ohatchee’s breakthrough 2024 volleyball team.

The two seniors celebrated their college signings Friday, Henderson with Snead State Community College and Finn with Southern Union.

This after they helped Ohatchee make its first appearance in a state final. The Indians finished as Class 3A runner up in 2024.

“I’ve had both of them since they’ve been up on varsity, and (assistant) Coach (Ronny) Henderson had them since seventh grade through junior high,” Ohatchee coach Rebecca Hughes said. “The leadership they’ve shown on that team and just kept everybody as one is a huge reason why we were so successful this year.

“Our team camaraderie was huge and goes to those two as leaders, on and off the court. I’m incredibly proud of the success that they’ve had.”

Ohatchee finished the 2024 season 41-10, falling to Mobile Christian in the 3A state final in Birmingham.

Henderson led the Indians with 578 kills. She also had a team-high 105 aces to go with 288 digs and 35 blocks. Finn had 110 kills, 101 aces and 44 blocks.

Henderson made the all-tournament team at state and, two-and-a-half months later, chose Snead State over an offer from Gadsden State. That former Alexandria star hitter Taylor Spradley is an assistant coach at Snead played a role.

Spradley’s younger sister Eryn, a senior hitter for Alexandria’s Class 4A state runner-up team.

“I thought about Gadsden just because it was so close, and I wouldn’t have to move out, and I could see my parents every day,” Henderson said, “But I just like the people at Snead. Plus, one of my best friend’s sisters is coaching there.”

Finn’s choice of Southern Union was all about the vibe she felt from the head coach, Ametrice Jackson, and assistant Regina Smith.

“I went to a bunch of camps over the summer, and mom had me go to Southern Union,” she said. “It was the cheapest, and she was like, just go to it and see … .

“She (Jackson) just helped everybody with everything. She would wait until you got that skill down and would move on and just help you the whole time, versus going to other camps, and they would just like, kind of, push you off, push you away. She really helped. She was attentive.”
