Weaver’s boys, girls win North Super Sectional, qualify 23 wrestlers for state. Cleburne County’s girls take South Super Sectional

BIRMINGHAM — Weaver’s three-time defending state-champion boys’ wrestling team took first place in the AHSAA Class 1A-4A North Super Sectional at Birmingham, and the Bearcats’ girls won the first-ever 1A–5A North Super Sectional.

Of the 24 Weaver wrestlers who competed in Birmingham’s Bill Harris Arena, 23 qualified for next week’s state tournament in Huntsville … 13 boys and 10 girls.

The top six boys and top four girls in each weight class qualify for state.

Leading the way for Weaver were eight weight-class champions: Champions: Jaylee Carter (114), Ashlyn Coleman (126), Mariah Johannson (132), Lena Johannson (145), Heaven Bishop (165), Baleigh Brown (185), Gianluca Torres (150) and Brandon Jolliff (285).

“I’m really proud of our kids,” Weaver coach Andy Fulmer said. “We won some big matches today, and our kids showed so much fight. Several of our kids won some matches they shouldn’t have on paper today that helped us tremendously, team wise.”

Weaver’s boys scored 302 points, followed by Alexandria (247.5), Ashville (162), Piedmont (153) and White Plains (153) to round out the top five.

Ohatchee (90) took 10th, Cherokee County (79) 11th, Pleasant Valley (74) 13th.

In Class 5A, Lincoln (102.5) took fifth, and Oxford (35) tied for ninth in 6A.

In 1A-5A girls, Weaver (231) took first, followed by Alexandria (164.5) in second, Lincoln (74) in fourth, Piedmont (68) in fifth and White Plains (three) in 21st.

Oxford’s girls (four) tied for 13th in 6A-7A.

In the South Super Sectional at Montgomery, Cleburne County’s boys took sixth in 1A-4A with 106.5 points, followed by Ranburne (93) in 10th and Wellborn (91.5) in 11th. Saks didn’t score.

Cleburne County’s girls won the 1A–5A South Super Sectional with 131.5 points, followed by Wellborn (58) in fourth and Saks (29) in 12th. 

Other top performers from area teams that had state qualifiers:

North 1A-4A boys

ALEXANDRIA: Jeremy Lambert (106), Ryker Houston (113), Hudson Hartzog (120) and Dean Boxley (215) won their weight classes. The Valley Cubs qualified 10 for state.

PIEDMONT: The Bulldogs qualified five for state, led by a second-place finish from Myles Bailey (106).

WHITE PLAINS: The Wildcats qualified six for state, led by Mason Hahm (126), who finished first in his weight class.

OHATCHEE: The Indians qualified four for state, led by third-place finisher Gus Hunter (190).

CHEROKEE COUNTY: The Warriors qualified two wrestlers for state, both first-place finishers … Kurtis Soles (132) and Andrew Young (157).

PLEASANT VALLEY: Josh Buse (285) took second in his class to lead two Raiders who qualified for state.

North 5A boys

LINCOLN: The Golden Bears qualified four for state, led by second-place finishers Fabian Kearse (132) and Joel Gaston (175).

North 6A boys

OXFORD: The Yellow Jackets qualified three sixth-place finishers: Dean Farque (106), Karlise Hubbard (113) and Jaxon Newton (175).

North 1A-5A girls

ALEXANDRIA: Nine Valley Cubs qualified, led by second-place finishers Tammy Phillips (120), Morgan Baskins (126), Katelyn Robertson (132), Emerald Hunter (165) and Ebony Hunter (185).

LINCOLN: Two third-place finishers led five Golden Bear state qualifiers … Riley Stephens (120) and Jailah McGowan (235).

PIEDMONT: The Bulldogs qualified three for state, led by second-place finishers Anna Adams (114) and Annabell Hilburn (235).

South 1A-4A boys

CLEBURNE COUNTY: Austin Mayfield led four state qualifiers, winning the 157-pound division.

RANBURNE: Carter Driver (113) and Zaden Benefield (285) qualified with second-place finishes.

WELLBORN: Noah Smith (106) took third to lead for Panthers who qualified for state.

South 1A-5A girls

CLEBURNE COUNTY: The TIgers had four weight-class winners among six state qualifiers: Avalena Williamson (100), Addalyn Mayfield (107), Layla Poore (120) and Falon Curvin (145).

WELLBORN: Rayna McCord (107) and Bethany Fowler (165) took second place to lead three Panthers who qualified for state. 

SAKS: Alondra Chavero won the 114 class to qualify for state.
