Weaver, Alexandria girls are first and second after the first day. Weaver, Alexandria boys stand second and third.

HUNTSVILLE — Weaver and Alexandria girls stand in first and second place in Class 1A-5A after the first day of the state wrestling tournament, and Weaver and Alexandria boys are second and third in 1A-4A.

The state wrestling tournament started at the Von Braun Center. The championships run through Saturday’s consolation and championship finals.

Weaver’s girls have 38 points to Alexandria’s 18.

This year marks the first year for the 1A-5A division in AHSAA girls’ wrestling. Weaver finished fifth at state a year ago, behind four Class 7A schools.

Weaver’s boys, the three-time defending 1A-4A champions, have 72.5 points. Tallassee, which moved down from 5A before this school year, is first with 89.

Alexandria stands with 62.5.

Individual highlights

—White Plains senior Mason Hahm (30-0), a 2024 state champion, remained unbeaten at 126 pounds with one win coming with a pin at 1:20. He opened with a bye and also advanced to Friday’s winners’ bracket semifinals.

—Cleburne County’s Austen Mayfield (40-0), also a returning state champion, advanced to the semifinals at 150 pounds.

—Weaver’s Lena Johannson, a four-time state champion, improved to 37-0 by pinning Raelyn Lovold (Escambia County) in the 145-pound division.

—Alexandria’s Tammy Phillips upped to 45-5, pinning Layla Poore (Cleburne County) in the 120-pound division.

—Weaver’s Haiden Hise (41-8) produced a team-best 11.0 team points, pinning Ben Swindle (Bayside Academy) and Braison Howard (West End).
