Spring roundup

White Plains softball makes Burgess a winner in head-coaching debut, and White Plains baseball tops Jacksonville. Also, baseball reports from Oxford, Cleburne County, Spring Garden, Southside, Handley, Hope Christian and Wellborn.

LINCOLN — Carli Fritts homered and drove in two runs, White Plains beat Lincoln 3-2 Monday to make alumna Anna Burgess a winner in her first game as the Wildcats’ softball coach.

The former Anna Snider became White Plains’ fourth head coach in four years during the offseason after serving as an assistant at Alexandria.

Sara Kate Adams went 2-for-4 with a double.

Leighton Arnold pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts over seven innings. She allowed three hits and three walks.

Aubrey Machen had Lincoln’s highlight with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Shelby Williams struck out 11 batters over seven innings. She also allowed five hits, four walks and three earned runs.

Baseball

WHITE PLAINS 3, JACKSONVILLE 1: Luke Richardson and Beau Madrigal pitched a combined two-hitter, and White Plains downed Jacksonville 3-1 on Monday at Henry Farm Park.

Richardson allowed two hits and one earned run in five innings. He struck out six batters and walked five.

Madrigal worked the final two innings, allowing no hits or runs while issuing one walk.

White Plains’ Dalton Luker had a single and an RBI, and Jacob Stamm had an RBI. Ashton Wallace doubled and scored a run.

Jacksonville’s Jackson Bonner doubled and scored Jacksonville’s run.

Matthew Salmon pitched a solid start, working five innings with three strikeouts and one walk. He allowed two hits and two earned runs.

John Ducar allowed two hits with three strikeouts, one walk and no runs in two innings of work.

THOMPSON 5, OXFORD 4: Oxford scored a run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings but came up one run short while falling to 1-3 against an early schedule that features Spain Park, Hewitt-Trussville, Gardendale and Thompson.

Nick Richardson led Oxford at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Canaan Whitman went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Whitman, Marcus Lawler, Rocco Maniscalo and Daniel Tims-Becerra all saw action on the mound for Oxford. Whitman took the loss, giving up two hits, three earned runs and four walks with two strikeouts in two innings.

CLEBURNE COUNTY 8, HORSESHOE BEND 1:  Hunter Gore went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run to lead Cleburne County at the plate.

Asher Brown had a double and RBI while going 2-for-4, and Easton Thompson had two singles and an RBI. Gavin Robinson also drove in a run.

Gabriel Wickersham went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Brown, Cody Clayton and Aiden Laminack combined to hold Horseshoe Bend to three hits. Brown struck out nine batters.

SAND ROCK 15, SPRING GARDEN 14: The Panthers banged out 13 hits in a loss, including doubles by Zane Edwards, Gray Simpson and Hayes Garmon.

Edwards went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, and Connor Bates had a single, three RBIs and one run. Garmon had two hits, two RBIs and a run, Carson Bostick two hits a run and one RBI and Jonathan Baker two hits and three runs. 

John Welsh also drove in two runs.

SOUTHSIDE 3, MUNFORD 2: Southside’s Abe Martin went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI, and Shelby Houston doubled, scored two runs and had an RBI for Southside.

Ethan Sarratt had a single and RBI, and Alex Brewer went 2-for-3. 

Sarratt and Eli Stewart combined to hold Munford to three hits and two earned runs. Stewart struck out four batters in four innings, and Sarratt fanned three in three innings.

Munford got an RBI apiece from Gatlin Watts and Kane Krafthefer, and Brody Wilson doubled and scored a run.

HANDLEY 8, CENTRAL-CLAY 7: Handley scored a walk-off run on an error after Central-Clay scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game.

Handley’s Ben Pike went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs, and Aden Anthony went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run.

Cordan Patterson doubled and scored a run,

Central-Clay’s Tyler Boyd went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI, and Tucker Brown went 2-for-3 with a run. Andrew Seals singled and drove in two runs, and the Vols got an RBI apiece from J.T. Wilkerson and Taylor Boyd.

EVANGEL 8-1, HOPE 2-0: Hope Christian Academy played its first-ever varsity baseball games Monday, falling to Evangel Christian 8-2 and 1-0 at Oxford’s Big Jack Stovall Sports Complex.

Hope’s Eli Bozeman and Levi Franklin each had a single and RBI in the first game, and Kainen Bozeman singled and scored a run.

Trevor Ryals pitched all five innings in the second game, allowing three hits and no earned runs with 10 strikeouts and no walks. 

WELLBORN 4, GLENCOE 3: Wellborn’s Tanner Ingram pitched a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts. Glencoe scored three runs, one earned, with the help of one error and two hit basemen.

Wellborn’s Dozer Hayes and Zachary Pressley each had a single and an RBI, and Cameron O’Brien had an RBI. Ingram went 2-for-3, and Liam Avery was 2-for-4 with a run.
