ALEXANDRIA — Defending Calhoun County baseball champion Oxford will hold the No. 1 seed going into this year’s tournament, and 2024 runner–up and Class 5A state champion Alexandria was voted No. 2 by the county’s coaches Sunday.
Coaches voted at the annual seeding meeting at Alexandria High School.
Oxford and Alexandria played in a classic county final last year, with Oxford prevailing 3-2 in 11 innings on Judd Syer’s walk-off double.
Syer and second-round draft pick Carter Johnson are among Oxford’s graduation losses. Alexandria lost 15 seniors, including pitcher Tripp Patterson, who pitched an eight-inning gem to get Alexandria to extra innings.
“Last year, we had a great game with Alexandria in the championship,” Oxford coach Travis Janssen said. “It was one of the best games of the year that we played in, and just excited about it.”
Oxford is 3-3 on the year after beating Piedmont and Hokes Bluff on Saturday. Janssen called his 2025 team “a work in progress.”
“We’re trying to fit the pieces together, trying to get healthy on the mound,” he said. “Guys have good attitudes, but we’re very much a work in progress right now. We’ve got some guys that are trying to do too much.
“It’s so early in the year, and we’ve played good people. Some guys aren’t comfortable yet in their roles.”
