ALEXANDRIA — Defending champion Alexandria was the unanimous choice as top seed for the coming Calhoun County softball tournament at Sunday’s coaches’ vote.

The Valley Cubs (14-3-2), No. 2 2. Pleasant Valley (18-3), No. 3. White Plains (11-7) and No. 4 Ohatchee (17-6) will get first-round byes.

The tournament starts March 31, with games April 1 and April 3 and April 4. The first three days will play out at Woodland Park, and the final day will play out at Jacksonville State University.

“It means a lot being voted the No. 1 seed and everything, but there’s a lot of capable teams in this county,” Alexandria coach Brian Hess said. “White Plains and Pleasant Valley are both extremely good, and Oxford can always be there and the end, and Ohatchee is good.

“The top five, specifically, anybody can win on any given night. I’ll look for a lot of upsets this year.”

Alexandria just went 4-1-1 in the Gulf Coast Classic, including a split of two games with St. James. A key early season development is the pitching of eighth-grader Reece Carr to give the Valley Cubs a one-two punch with senior Pressley Slaton.

“I’m excited how we’re playing right now,” Hess said. “We’re starting to hit our stride and getting some youthfulness out of us. We’ve got an eighth-grader that’s stepping up right now and throwing really, really well.

“As long as Reece keeps giving us the innings that we need, I like where we’re headed.”
