PINE HILL — Cam Hurst came into this year’s Calhoun County Tournament more than ready to be graduated White Plains teammate Sawyer Edwards’ heir apparent atop the county high school golf scene.
Hurst just about did it while Edwards was still in high school.
The junior who challenged Edwards for the win in 2024 leads the field after Monday’s first round at Pine Hill Country Club, shooting an even-par 72 to lead Donoho;s Carson Chandler by one stroke and Alexandria’s Fisher Prichard by two.
White Plains’ boys lead the team competition at 303, eight strokes ahead of Alexandria.

Alexandria’s girls flipped the script, with Jasmine Stokes shooting 80 to lead Alexandria teammate Neveah Foster by five shots. The Valley Cubs posted a team score of 263 to lead defending champion White Plains by two strokes.
The tournament concludes with Tuesday’s second round.
Hurst looks to finish the job after his final-round surge put him in position to challenge Edwards last year. Hurst shot his first under–par round in a tournament at 71 and nearly made up four strokes on Edwards, who fought off his then-sophomore challenge by two strokes for his second county title.
Edwards warned after last year’s final round that Hurst is the future of Calhoun County high school golf. Hurst came ready to turn the future into the present Monday.
“That helps a lot,” Hurst said. “I know that, coming down the stretch, I was able to give Sawyer a little competition, so it definitely helps my confidence, for sure.”
White Plains coach Chris Randall said Hurst “stayed steady.”
“He didn’t try to do too much,” Randall said. “He really played within himself. His club selection was perfect. I don’t think he had a mental mistake.
“He had a three-putt that horseshoed out on him on his second hole today. Other than that, he was just steady.”
White Plains also got 76s from Ethan McCareeth and Ryder Hudgins. Ben Campbell settled down after a 4-over start through four holes to shoot 79.
“I was really pleased that we stayed away from the big numbers,” Randall said. “That’s what you have to have. You can’t let that one hole that you felt like you should’ve birdied and maybe you bogey it (get to you). You have to be where your feet are.
“It’s an individual sport within a team spot, and we need that number to be low. You have to play that next hole. You can’t pout. You have to keep grinding. I thought we did a really good job of that today.”
Alexandria’s girls look to claim the title that eluded them last year. They finished second to White Plains last year and went on to win the Class 4A-5A state title.
Stokes, the 14-under Alabama Junior Golf Association player of the year for 2024, led the charge Monday.
“It feels amazing to be in the lead,” she said. “Last year, I got third in my very first year. For my second year on the team, I feel pretty good.”
Foster’s 85 and Alana Prickett’s 98 rounded out Alexandria’s team total. Cam McElroy paced White Plains at 86, followed by Aubree Cobb’s 89 and a 90 from Maylee Stewart.
“We played just OK,” Alexandria coach Craig Kiker said. “We’re asking a lot out of Alana. She was not on the team, or not in the top four, last year, so we’re asking a lot of her, just being a freshman and have to really contribute.”
