ODENVILLE — One thing didn’t change when the AHSAA reclassified Jacksonville up to Class 5A. The Golden Eagles still win area baseball titles.

Jacksonville completed a 5A, Area 11 sweep of St. Clair County on Thursday, winning both games 6-2.

That coupled with Lincoln’s 6-5 loss to Moody in 10 innings put Jacksonville (16-15) on top.

All four teams in the area went into this week tied. Jacksonville came away with its fourth consecutive area title and the last one under head coach Jamison Edwards, who is leaving after this school year to be head baseball coach and a football offensive coordinator at White Plains.

“We’ve tried to establish a culture that is consistently competitive,” Edwards said. “And we push our guys to play tough schedules and to play in tough games. We do that because we know just how tough it is in an area like this, where going into the last week, all four teams were tied for first place.

“I told the guys how proud I was of them, for this one especially, because of all the things they’ve had to work through that are not part of a normal season as we have made our way through area play. And this one is special, not just because it’s the fourth one in a row, which has never been done at Jacksonville, but it’s special to me because this is the way I get to leave the program.”

Jacksonville beat St. Clair County 1-0 on Tuesday. Thursday’s first game saw Matthew Salmon get the win, allowing three hits with five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Nicholas Johnson worked a perfect 2 2/3 innings with one strikeout.

Xaye Lemon went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jackson Bonner went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Salmon added a single and an RBI, and John Ducar went 3-for-4 with a run.

Loggins went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Lemon and Johnson each had a single and an RBI, and Mallett added an RBI.

“Extremely proud of these guys,” Edwards said. “We went into this week knowing we needed to win the first two games of the area series to get into the playoffs. Matt Salmon and Nick Johnson did an awesome job on the mound today.
