CHELSEA — Alexandria’s softball team went 2-3 in a weekend round-robin at Chelsea Sports Complex, beating Class 6A fifth-ranked Helena 4-2 and falling to 4A top-ranked Orange Beach 12-0 on Friday then losing to 7A top-ranked Thompson 3-2 and 6A No. 2 Chelsea 9-6 before beating Auburn, receiving votes inn 7A, 4-1 on Saturday.
The Valley Cubs (27-7-2) are No. 4 in Class 4A in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll.
“I’m going to say this because (I) don’t say it often,” Alexandria coach Brian Hess said. “I’m so proud of my team this weekend and how they competed. To go 2-3 on the weekend in a round robin where we played Helena, Orange Beach, Thompson, Chelsea and Auburn, I’m incredibly proud of this group of players.”
Pressley Slaton spread out six hits with seven strikeouts against Helena and went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Brenlee Sparks went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Kaden Pritchett went 1-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI.
Charlee Parris went 2-for-3 with a run.
Slaton pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts against Auburn and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Cali Hess went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Reece Carr went 2-for-3 with a double. Allyssa Hunt went 1-for-3 with a double and a run.
Highlights from other games:
—Against Thompson, Hunt went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Carr went 2-for-3 with a run. Parris added a triple and a run. Slaton pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits, three walls and two earned runs with one strikeout.
—Hunt went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI against Chelsea. Sparks went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run. Pritchett and Parris each doubled and scored a run, and Carr went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Hess went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run.
—BooBoo Bright had Alexandria’s hit, a single, against Orange Beach.
PV RUNNER UP: Pleasant Valley, the top-ranked team in Class 2A, finished as runner up in Randolph County’s 19-team tournament.
The Raiders (29-11) beat Hokes Bluff 3-2, Woodland 3-0 and Ashville 5-3 before falling to Boaz 2-1 in the final Saturday.
Highlights:
—Lily Henry and Haylie Lee worked two innings apiece combined to hold Hokes Bluff to five hits with five strikeouts. Lee got the win. Elise Wheeler went 2-for-3, and Ava Washington had an RBI. Alexa Cranmer went 1-for-3 with a run. Ellie Patterson went 1-for-2 with a run, and Lilly Robinson went 1-for-1 with a run.
—Henry pitched a no-hitter against Class 1A seventh-ranked Woodland, striking out three batters over six innings. She also went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Cranmer went 2-for-3 with a run, and Cailey Almaroad went 1-for-3 with a run.
—Henry allowed four hits with five strikeouts in four innings against Ashville. She also hit a solo home run. Cranmer went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Almaroad and Abby Evans each had a single and a run.
—Lee pitched a solid outing in the final against Boaz, allowing five hits with three strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Henry had a single and an RBI.
WOODLAND 2-1: Woodland (22-5) went 2-1 in the Randolph County tournament on Saturday, beating Weaver 5-3 and Randolph County 4-2 before falling to Pleasant Valley 3-0.
Highlights:
—Ella Waites went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run against Weaver, and L Phillips went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Alyssa Taylor went 2-for-3 with two runs, and S Vann added an RBI. R Williams got the win, allowing two walks but no hits or runs in 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.
—Taylor went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run against Randolph County, and Waites went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Williams pitched all five innings, spread out six hits with five strikeouts.
RANBURNE 2-1: Also playing in the Randolph County tournament, Ranburne (10-12) beat Cleburne County 4-0 and Jacksonville 6-4 before falling to Oak Grove 11-4.
Highlights:
—Shaylie Reaves and Addison Gibbs combined to hold Cleburne County to two hits. Reaves got the win. R Graham went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and K.K. Rolllins added an RBI.
—Autumn Lovvorn went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and a run against Jacksonville. Gibbs went 2-for-2 and scored a run. Karoline Meadows went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Jayla Stewart had a single and an RBI. Meadows pitched all four innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs with one strikeout.
—Lovvorn went 2-for-3 with a triple, a run and an RBI against Oak Grove, and Reaves added a double and a run. Graham chipped in an RBI.
MUNFORD 1-1: The Lions (20-6-1) went 1-1 at Randolph County on Saturday, beating Sand Rock 7-6 and falling to Ashville 3-2.
Highlights:
—Brooklyn Pressley went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBIs against Sand Rock. Addyson Britt went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs. Madison Arnold went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Jena Gaither went 2-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI. Ashtyn Bishop added a single and two runs.
—Pressley went 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBIs and a run against Ashville. Bishop added a double.
Baseball
ALEXANDRIA 12, DONOHO 3: Knox Faulkner went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs, and Alexandria beat visiting Donoho 12-3 in Saturday’s high school baseball action.
Camryn Johnson went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, and Sawyer Coggins went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
Cole Wheeler went 1-for-1 with a run and an RBI, and Jeremiah Heathcock went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Brodie Barber pitched a complete game, allowing three hits with 11 strikeouts for the win.
Donoho’s Hayes Farrell went 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, a run and an RBI, and Kai Cleckler added an RBI.
RANBURNE 12-0, SPRING GARDEN 4-5: Ranburne and Spring Garden split a doubleheader, with Ranburne winning the opener 12-4 and Spring Garden winning the second game 5-0.
Ranburne’s Colton Johnson went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and an RBI in the first game, and Cason Jones added two RBIs and two runs. Drew Davenport went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
James Ward got the win,allowing four hits with one strikeout in 4 2/3 innings.
Spring Garden’s Joel Hunter went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Zane Edwards went had a single and an RBI. Connor Bates went 2-for-3.
Spring Garden’s Hayes Garmon and Edwards combined for the shutout in the second game. Garmon allowed four hits with four strikeouts in five innings, and Edwards allowed a hit with a strikeout in two innings.
Grey Simpson went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, and Bates went 3-for-4 with a double and a run.
Hunter went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Garmon had a double and an RBI, and Hunter Parris went 2-for-3 with a double and a run.
