OXFORD — Records fell Tuesday, the first day of the Calhoun County track meet, but two truths remain constant.

Oxford’s defending champion boys lead, and Oxford’s and Alexandria’s girls remain in a tight battle for the title.

Led by Matt Tippets’ meet record in the 1,600-meter run and D.K. Wilson’s record run in the 400 dash, Oxford’s boys lead with 52 points. Anniston is second at 38.5 going into Wednesday’s events at Choccolocco Park.

Oxford’s boys won in 2024, beating Anniston  201.5-152.

Defending champion Alexandira’s girls lead Oxford 51-47 and appear on the way to another close battle. Alexandria edged Oxford 148-142 last year.

Those were the team leaders on a day that saw Tippets set a new meet record at four minutes, 29.12 seconds in the 1,600, breaking the mark set by former Yellow Jacket Morgan Silvers in 1991.

“Noah George tried a couple of times for it, and now Matt was able to break it this year,” Oxford coach Landon Delozioer said. “That was really cool, especially to keep it in Oxford.”

Wilson’s 49.03-second time in the 400 broke a 20-year-old meet record held by Jacksonville’s Ricky Davis.

Weaver’s KeShawn Allen broke his 1-year-old record in the 110 hurdles prelims, finishing in 14.26 seconds. His 2024 record was 14.84.

Also, Jacksonville Christian’s Mollie Mullinax’s qualifying time of 14,73 seconds in the girls’ 100 hurdles established a new meet standard. Piedmont’s Karri Green set the old record of 14.86 in 2016.

As for the team standings, Oxford’s boys appear well on their way to their eighth county title.

“We’ve had some really goods and some really big heart  breakers,” Delozier said. “Either way, where we are is a good way to end the day.”

Alexandria’s girls won the crown back last year, ending Oxford’s two-year run on top. The Valley Cubs seek their sixth county title.

“We did some really good things early in the day,” Alexandria coach Chase Brisendine said. “Later in the day, some things didn’t quite go our way.

“It’s going to be close, no matter what, at the end.”
