Spring playoffs

Jacksonville’s girls shut out Boaz, eye second-round match with Boaz. Donoho’s girls finish fourth at state tennis, and Wakefield now has chance to be part of state-championship teams in three sports.

BOAZ — Kylie Terrell scored both goals, and Jacksonville’s girls’ soccer team beat Boaz 2-0 in a first-round Class 5A playoff match Friday.

Jacksonville advanced to the second round for the fifth year in a row and will play host to Westbrook Christian at a date and time to be determined. The second round is Monday and Tuesday.

Westbrook beat Douglas 9-0 in the first round.

Jacksonville overcame when Golden Eagles coach Kim Darby called “a very tough, physical match” that started after an hour’s weather delay.

The first goal came 15 minutes into the match. Forward Emerson Weaver made a run down the right side of the field and crossed to Terrell, who scored.

About 10 minutes later, Sarah Sloughfy took a corner kick, crossing to Weaver, who again, passed to Terrell for the finish.

The defensive efforts of center back Emma Easterling and defensive midfielder Joeh Kim, combined with goalie Mya Swain’s five saves.

Tennis

Donoho’s girls finished fourth in the Class 4A-5A state meet. Sardis won with 65 points, followed by Deshler 42, Saint James 36, Donoho 34, Randolph 31, Briarwood Christian 30, Demopolis 24, LAMP 14, Providence Christian 14, Madison Academy 13, Russellville 12, Sipsey Valley 12, Westbrook Christian 11, Arab 6, St. Michael Catholic 5, Montgomery Catholic 5, Indian Springs 4 and Orange Beach 0.

The No. 3 doubles team of Natalie Rodgers/Samantha Wakefield took first place, beating Providence Christian’s Madelyn Hall/Haisten Grace Price 6-1, 6-3. 

Wakefield added tennis to her load this spring. She has also been a key contributor on state-championship volleyball teams at Donoho, and she’s a key contributor for Donoho’s undefeated soccer team, which has been ranked No. 1 in Class 1A-3A all season.

The senior can finish as a state champion in three sports.

Donoho’s Claire Tollison finished runner up in No. 6 singles.

Track

Sectional meets started Friday and will conclude Saturday. Team results and a list of area state qualifiers will be published and updated with provisionals. Sectional results can be tracked on this link.
